Cultivation of hemp in Hungary too…
Hemp cultivation has ancient traditions in history and experts from various fields of related literature such as archaeology, anthropology, biology, economics and history. These sources all agree that from 1000 BC to the end of the 1800s, this plant was the most widespread agricultural crop on our planet.
Hemp processing
The processing of this plant used to be the most important industry, through which various sectors helped the population worldwide to produce thousands of types of hemp products.
The hemp plant utilizes sunlight better than any other plant. Indeed, it has the capacity to grow to a height of 3-6 meters in a single season. What’s more, it can grow in almost any climate, making it a primary renewable natural resource.
When talking about the industrial cultivation of hemp, it is important to specifically clarify the plant in question:
Taxonomic class: Angiosperm
Order: Rosales
Family: Cannabaceae
Genus: Cannabis
Species: Cannabis sativa L.
Subspecies:
- Cannabis sativa sp. sativa ( Hemp) synonymous names; hemp, cultivated hemp, industrial hemp, fiber-seed hemp
- Cannabis sativa sp. indica ( cannabis) are synonymous names; Indian hemp, grass, marijuana
- Cannabis sativa sp. ruderalis, northern weed hemp
Thus, industrial hemp is a variety of strains belonging to the species Cannabis sativa L.
Systematic strain: – Crampy
Class: – dicotyledonous
Order: – Rose flowers
Family: – Hemp
Tribe: – Cannabis
Species:
- Cannabis sativa L. (Ang. Hemp) Synonym Names; hemp, grown hemp, industrial hemp, fiber-core hemp
- Cannabis Indica (Cannabis), Synonym Names; Indian hemp, grass, marijuana
- Cannabis ruderalis, north weed hemp
- Cannabis spontanea, synonym names; Wild hemp, cultivated hemp, roadside hemp
Thus, industrial hemp is a variety of strains belonging to the species Cannabis sativa L.
Hemp cultivation in the Carpathian Basin
Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions of the Carpathian Basin, the cultivation of high-quality hemp has a centuries-old tradition in Hungary.
The legacy of IVÁN BÓCSA for the hemp farmers of the future
In connection with the research and plant breeding of domestic industrial hemp varieties, it is essential to mention Iván Bócsa. He gave an extraordinary contribution to the world-class foundations of domestic large-scale hemp production, specifically.
In hemp breeding, he developed the Kompolti variety. This is the oldest commonly cultivated variety since its official recognition in 1955. He developed the UNIKO hemp variety, whose F1 stock is record-breaking in seed production and its F2 generation is unrivalled in fiber production. He also developed the first hybrid hemp variety (B-7), and in Hungary he produced monoecious (hermaphrodite) hemp for the first time and hybrid hemp for the first time in the world. Thanks to his above-mentioned achievements, Hungary was able to produce the highest quality standard hemp fibers in the world area proportionally in the highest quantities by the early 70s.
At that time, about 60,000 hectares of hemp was growing in Hungary!
The decline of the golden age of hemp cultivation in Hungary
Hemp cultivation in Hungary:
After the “golden age” of the 1970s, other crops gradually pushed industrial hemp out of the fields. The reasons for this – in addition to the appearance of artificial fibers – was the increase in yields of other economic crops and other economic conflicts of interests.
By the early 1990s, arable hemp cultivation had almost completely disappeared, leaving only the production to maintain the strains in some traditional areas. At the same time, the network of factories built for processing was left without raw materials. Shockingly, they were shut down without development or modernization. In addition to strain conservation, domestic cultivation fell into deep sleep until the mid-2010s.
Hemp production is booming again! (2015)
Since 2015, there is an increasing interest in hemp yet again. Nonetheless, the long inactive pause in cultivation has forced farmers to literally start from ground zero. Now they are making strides to build up the machinery and tools necessary for production beside rediscovering the cultivation methods.
This procedure is still ongoing slowly. As of today, in the lack of significant sources and government subsidies, substantial expansion is not likely. During the 2020 agricultural season, cultivation was taking place on 100 Ha altogether. The development of tools necessary for the processing of raw materials has restarted. Along with this, lots of new machinery is assembled to help farmers manufacture the most effective and best quality raw material.
Regulation of hemp production
The regulation of the cultivation of industrial hemp developed the same way as the culivation of other farm crops. Cultivation is only possible within the framework of strict regulations.
- hemp seed: when buying seed, it is important to purchase seeds with a metal sealed number. These must come from seed vaults and hemp seeds must have “certificate of origin”. The varieties listed in the European Union and the Hungarian registry can be sown both indoors and outdoors in Hungary!
- Aid: Farmers who receive land-based aid will always be included in the MA system.
- state supervision: at the behest of the Ministry of Agriculture during the period of flowering, the employees of the NÉBIH take samples according to standards from the plants. These are tested in their own laboratory to determine THC content at the expense of the state!

HUNHEMP ZRT IS A PIONEER OF DOMESTIC CBD
PRODUCTION!
Hunhemp Zrt.’s activities extend to the cultivation of hemp seeds and seed production within the industrial verticum, but they focus mostly on the production of the biomass, which is the raw material for Hemp Complex CBGA and CBDA oils produced by them.
Goals:
The primary objective of HunHemp Inc. is to produce the highest quality CBD oils and other hemp products grown domestically. In this spirit, several researches have been conducted in cooperation with BME (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) in the fields of extraction and separation technology.
Quality assurance:
During the production process, our production sites are selected with great care. Before sowing, with the initial soil test we exclude the possibility of the presence of any harmful heavy metals and chemical residues in the hemp plant we grow. In addition to the above testing of materials, we also examine the entire cannabinoid and terpene profile several times during the growing season of plants. We also put them through quality testing during harvesting, and at different stages of hemp processing as well.
Hemp cultivation in Hungary from seeds with local selection and genetics!
The main profile of HunHemp Zrt. is the production of premium quality cannabinoid oils and hemp products, which they were first to implement in Hungary!
Promoting the cultivation of hemp is also an affair of our heart! The cultivation of this extremely versatile plant was unfairly and unreasonably pushed out of the farmlands.
The jointly established production partner program of CbdBase and HunHemp Zrt. provides farmers with the opportunity to learn about the myriad possibilities of growing the hemp plant. Also, to become participants of the production process in the Hungarian market-leading Hemp Complex product line.
